“Desserts are served at the end of the meal to revive interest in the meal and to produce a sense of complete satisfaction…they leave a lingering memory of the delicious flavor…and they appeal to the eye as well as the palate. All of which would be good enough reason for trying every one of the recipes in this chapter. But you’ll probably need no coaxing to do that, for where is the hostess who doesn’t enjoy the feeling of pride that accompanies the moment when she brings in the dessert, and who doesn’t love to hear the Oh’s and Ah’s that are sure to greet a particularly delectable creation?”

–intro to the Desserts chapter in Meta Given’s Modern Encyclopedia of Cooking, Volume I by Meta Given. Chicago: J. G. Ferguson, 1959.

1959 was a very good year.

: D

I am enjoying your writing and skills, and I rarely confess to envying another woman her good fortune in a man (because generally, what’s for me to envy?)…but Bob’s cooking expertise lies in popcorn (seriously, though: the best), burritos (all that joint-rolling proved useful in other realms), and oatmeal.

I ain’t complainin’. He does damn near everything else, but how nice it would be to have a partner in the kitchen.

So how come I’m not better at stuffing burritos? At least I have an edge on Jaden’s ginger storage technique (http://steamykitchen.com/blog/2007/12/02/fresh-ginger-tips/ )

Thanks, Tana!

I’m not far removed from ’59 myself. My mom has a copy of the Given book when it was published in a single volume. I think hers is from ’49 and she still uses it!

I’ve always enjoyed cooking, but the more I learn, the more I love it. Plus, it’s a great way to spend time with my bride.

Lisa, that’s a helluva Bob Marley ginger roll, mon!
